Philip K. Dick (1928-1982)

I don`t think that it`s really nessessary to place all usual information such as biography and bibliography of the author here. Instead I`d like to place here the information concerning the Russian editions of Philip K. Dick books. As for biography and bibliography you can find them visiting other great sites dedicated to Philip K. Dick. There is quite a few very interesting sites concerning Philip K. Dick in the net.

Books by PKD produced in Russia Comments on translation

But first I would like to say a work about some traditions of Russian publishing business. In Russia about 99% of books (at least SF books) are hardback. I`ve never seen any PKD book, for instance, that was paperback (at least have not seen up to date) so all the books listed below are hardback. Another thing is, 99% of our books contain more than one single novel of the author chosen. usually we have two-three novels in one edition or a couple of novels and a few short stories or several novellae and short stories or whatever like that. So, don`t be surprised that I`ll list several titles in one book.I listed here all books that I know, it`s not exactly the full list.

There is yet another thing about this page. The content of "Russian version" and this version do not even get close. 90% of Russian internet users don`t read English, that`s why the "Russian version" of the page contains usual information like PKD biography and so on. Mostly that information is translated by me from other English language sites concerning PKD.

Comments on Russian translations of PKD books:

Well, what to say about the translations... Sometimes they are just fine but sometimes I would have to barely guess what book I`m reading because the titles of the books are translated... well, not even close to the original. For instance, The Man Who Japed was translated as The Head on a Plate, Now Wait for the Last Year became The Time Drug and The Simulacra in Russian translation became Something Like That. We Can Build You became The Toy Named "Life", I have read Our Friends From Frolix 8 as The God`s Best Friend and Dr. Bloodmoney... - as With Death In My Pocket. There are five different titles for Beyond Lies the Wub because nobody over here really knows how to pronounce Wub. There are also several versions of We Can Remember... just because the word "wholesale" doesn`t exist in Russian language as one word. Someone even translated it as Out of the Deep Corners of Memory just not to mess with that "wholesale" thing. I`m not even mentioning that in the SF Encyclopaedia they made a mistake in PKD`s name - Philip is spelled with two p. Well, I`ve mentioned it now.
