THE NIGHTS IN THE VILLAGE NEAR DIKANKA. THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

1961 dur. 90 min.
dir. Alexander Row. Based on the novel by Nicolai Gogol. The Devil that was visiting a local witch stole the Moon, tha whole village was in the darkness. The local smith Vacula asked his beloved beauty Oksana to marry him and got "No". He went to ask an advise from The Rougue Big Stomach Patsuk/a local wise guy/ but found the Devil, sat on him and went to the capital St.-Petersbourg to the Queen. He asked her for her shoes to give Oksana as the engagement present. Total chaos with a happy end. Nicolai Gogol (1809-1852) is one of the most known Russian classic writers. His satiric comedy plays are in the school program of literature. He showed the middle-class society in ugly grotesque like way. He also wrote very well known horror stories VYI and THE NIGHTS IN THE VILLAGE NEAR DIKANKA and some other stories based on the mythology of Ukraina involving Devil, spirits, vampires, witches and some other demonic creatures from Hell. The invironment of those stories are the same as in Roman Polanski`s film FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS. When I saw that film I thought that it was the story that Gogol could have written. The look of this film is also right from Gogol`s stories.

GUEST FROM THE FUTURE

It was the second sci-fi TV hit for children which made a big star out of the girl who played Alice.(The girl to the left at the picture on the left. Sorry for the quality of some pictures, It`s hard to get hold of pictures from Russian films at all)

Short animated film based on the novel by Kir Bulytchev.

They travel far into the terrain, set a village and raise children. The children of survivers know about the ship and Earth only by the stories their parents have told them. From time to time the villagers set a group that tries to reach the remains of the ship and get some stuff from there. But because of the climat of the planet people can only reach the ship during short time of suumer as they have to cross a pretty hard passage. The film tells the story of one successful expedition. Three youngsters and one old surviver are travelling to the spaceship trough the passage in the mountains and meeting all kind of creatures of this planet.
